Companies like EGO are pushing the bounds and limits in ways never before seen in this class, and it will not be very long before the thought of a homeowner by means of a gasoline instrument to mow or trim the lawn is a fantastic idea. EGO is a brand new brand whose instruments are now available at The Home Depot and which feature never-before-seen 56V ion battery packs. These packs are remarkable. In addition to looking like something you would see powering a time machine in a science fiction movie, they’re built really well and seem to be able to resist the rigors of outdoor use and misuse.

But with new technology and new tools come brand new surprises. The greatest surprise of all has to be the fact that the brand new 4.0 Ah 56V battery pack from EGO can be recharged in just 30 minutes! The 2.0 Ah pack may get fully recharged in only 25 minutes. It’s actually completely incredible –that is exactly why we examined it after emptying a full package all of the way down…just to discover that the claims are true. Together with the EGO CH5500 charger, it does really recharge it is largest battery in under thirty minutes. To make it even better, charging for just 15 minutes brings you to 50 percent to finish a job if you’re in a hurry.
The CH5500 comes with EGO’s brand new 20-inch Cordless Lawn Mower, but it’s also a $99 choice for anybody who bought the company’s other tools (which include the slower, but nevertheless impressive CH2100. Together with the CH2100, you can recharge a 2.0 Ah battery in approximately 40 minutes. The toss-up is whether you want to purchase a charger, or just pick up an extra battery to swap out if you need more constant run-time. If you purchased the 56V lawn mower, then you have just a small bit of either.
EGO’s flagship product is that their 20-inch 56-volt Cordless Lawnmower. The reason the firm can get excited about this item is two-fold. For starters, it boasts as much or more energy than its gas-powered counterpart, and second, the 56V battery is a one-of-a-kind solution that delivers up to 40% more electricity (which could also translate into run-time) compared to prior 40V reigning winner.
Flip-Folding Away…
The first thing caught my attention was the image of the mower standing erect, perfectly folded and stowed away in a garage. Now, unless they’ve invented gyroscopic gas tanks in the past day or so, this is something that is absolutely impossible with a conventional lawn mower. And other cordless versions I have seen, haven’t caught on to this either. That is what we in the industry like to call”disruptive innovation”. It is a new innovation that shakes things up and forces others to respond.
Do not hesitate to see next-gen cordless lawnmowers follow suit within the forthcoming years–if they do not, they’re missing the ship. And it is not merely that it folds up–it does so readily, with a handle that collapses down telescopically, without having to throw anything or reverse any levers. There are even grips on front and the back to allow you to lift the mower as necessary without cutting into your palms. I raised it plenty of times without gloves rather than once cut off the flow to my fingers as I do with most other mowers.
Cutting Characteristics
There are additional characteristics worth mentioning about the EGO 56V mower. This includes the full-size 20-inch cutting deck. The 56V battery pack provides enough energy to make it possible, and it will operate for 45 minutes. That is enough time to cut out a small yard without having a recharge or a replacement battery. I will get into how it completed in only a bit, but let us state that the run-time attribute is a major plus.
One other feature I liked was the one-handed cutting height control. Unlike the absurd four-wheel height adjustments still being used now on the most popular mowers, it is possible to just catch the”stick shift” lever on the left side of the mower and adjust it into any of five places…and that’s it. You just move it along with the height is set. This is excellent for if you need to adjust the height for a different area or lawn, or when you only wish to perform a high cut as you go into winter.
Easy Starting
Beginning the mower is a simple matter of extending the handle and bending it, inserting the 56V 4.0 Ah battery, placing and pushing the safety key, and pulling on the bond bar/handle. That’s it–that the mower starts up. To turn it off, simply forego the bond handle. When you do turn off the mower, then the blade rotates somewhat before quitting. It’s an integrated electric brake that stops the blade, but it is not quite as quick as a circular saw or drill (it also includes a lot more rotating motion to stop). The main point is that you don’t wish to start and stop the mower without taking care to allow the blade to come to a full stop.
Other products I have seen, and that’s a battery level indicator that’s built right into the cover of the mower. As a consequence, that you may observe the condition of the battery without needing to open up the plastic cover to press the button. It also suggests that the LED light is on. Yes, the mower has a double LED lighting system with four discrete Cree-style LEDs. This would sound absurd but for the fact that this EGO mower is actually fairly quiet–especially if compared to a classic 2-cycle engine. The only sound you’ve got is that the electrical motor and, of course, the blade cutting the grass at high speed.
Look, Ma, No Vibration!
The EGO 20-inch mower is almost vibration-free. Seriously, you can barely feel it as you walk behind. This is due to the aluminum tube used in the grips, plus the machine is incredibly well-balanced. About the only trade-off, apart from the steep $499 price tag, is fat. This machine comes in at approximately 62 pounds, that is nearly 33 percent more than a rival 40V product we’ve used and on the weight of a small gas powered version. The additional stability of the tool also makes it somewhat less pliable, using a slightly longer wheelbase than we’re utilized to.
This didn’t translate into any real-world troubles, but we would not clarify this weapon as”nimble”…more like a”system”. If I had to sum this up, I would say that the EGO mower is a revolutionary product which cuts well, is comfortable to push, easy to fold up, and provides more than sufficient run-time on the included 4.0 Ah battery pack. This can be an impressive mower which makes my gas-powered version suffer a serious inferiority complex.
